International Club of Berne

The International Club of Berne

In 1991, the founders of the International Club of Berne and its first committee members didn’t have a clue where the club would be in 25 years. And yet, here we are, still functioning, thanks to the commitment and energy of our volunteers and the support of our members.

From personal experience, I find that joining the International Club and becoming an active member on the committee was the best thing I could do to improve my social life in a new country. Not only have I found many good friends through the club, but the experience has also made me feel at home and glad to be living in Switzerland.

With best wishes for 2017 from all of us on the committee.
Nazanin Kupferschmid, President 2015-2017

The club was founded in 1991, as a non-political organisation open to all living in and around Berne, Switzerland, who are interested in meeting for social and cultural activities. We welcome people from all corners of the world. Our common language is English, though among our members many different languages can be heard. You can join this web site for free. Give us your postal address so we can send you our Newsletters. Then after a while, you can decide if you will join the club, fill out the Membership and Interest Forms, and pay 50.- or 60.- for the year.

Sunday: probably no-one will join others for a walk tomorrow - it will be cold, and we must maintain social distancing, meaning 2 meters between us. Reply on chat if you are interested in walks and hikes when it gets warmer.

Sunday: How about watching Asterix (on SF2 at 13:35) instead? And you can watch movies "simultaneously at home" with other club members and talk about them on a WhatsApp chat - join to find out more.

Sunday: summer time starts! You lose an hour of sleep, it will be later than you think!

If you like reading books, join the chat to choose the next books and plan the next meetings. These will be held online using Skype. Probably you use this already to talk with distance relatives, or you can ask for help.

We must also hold the club meetings online. To plan the next one, on non-violent communication, you should join the chat At the meeting after this, Joseph Thudianplakal will tell us about visiting India. And at a later meeting, we will talk about the Silk Road.

We can still stay active, communicating by phone and by post and online by chat and email.  If you would like to talk to someone, call me or Nazanin or Ulrike, see on page 2 of the Newsletter for the contacts. There are many groups in Berne which offer shopping help, you can ask about this by joining You can also chat in German or French or Spanish in the Cafè groups, see page 7 of the Newsletter.
