About Dürrenmatt
Dürrenmatt Mansarde on Laubeggstrasse 49 - Guided tours can be arranged.

There are three more Dürrenmatt walks, on afternoons 19th of June, 16 of August, 4 September.

And also, deeper discussions on Dürrenmatt on the evenings of 5 June, 19 June, and fourth of September. These are organized by the Heilliggeist and Dreifaltigkeit churches

There are few people available for the talk Wednesday
on Tolstoy's "Master and Man". I propose to forget this book.

The following book is "Das Versprechen" (The Pledge") by Friedrich Dürrenmatt.

Suggestions for the next books are welcome.

We read next "Master and Man" by Fyodor Dostoyevski.
YOu can download this from www.gutenberg.org.
I will put a version online and I can email it, or print it and send it, to anyone who needs it.

The following book is "Das Versprechen" (The Pledge") by Friedrich Dürrenmatt.

Further comments on "The Pearl"
- a terrifying book. A good life is destroyed, and there is no way out.
- survival is at stake. the native way of life is stable, secure, happy.
- this way does not survive the pressures of money (indirectly colonialism, capitalism, evil)

Books - thinking of some cultures around us.
Preferable to read in the original, if we can.
But a good translation is better than nothing.
1. Hermann Hesse - we have read Siddartha and I think Demian
2. Goethe - something short and simple ? Does that exist?
Online http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/author/586
3. Italian
Dante Alighieri - Divine Comedy
Niccolo Machiavelli - The Prince
4. French ... The Little Prince we discussed. We did talk further
5. Swiss. ...
Max Frisch - Homo Faber we discussed.
Durrenmatt - Das Versprechen = The Plege.

Some comments, as I review my chaotic notes.
1. The Pearl is a morality tale. A long parable. The destruction which wealth brings to the soul. Other such stories: Aseop, ...
2. A very harsh critique of colonialization. The Spanish conquerors 400 years of subjugation. Corruption e.g. the pearl buyers. The Church. Supression of culture and language.
3. A big theme of respect. Between the villagers, families, persons.
And lack of respect, between the classes.
4. Other books by John Steinbeck. These are all "must reads" in every lifetime? The Grapes of Wrath. Tortilla Flat.

Again we were only three. Question: where are the others? Slowly for various differrent reasons, they are dropping out. Answer: we open each event to all the members, even non-ICB, and advertise the books better.
